MEDICAL CODING
The practise of turning written descriptions of medical services into numeric or alphanumeric codes is known as medical coding. It entails giving diagnosis and treatments for illnesses codes from a classification system. In order to standardise and speed data collection and communication, this coding procedure is utilised in medical billing and administration.
The task of converting medical data from doctors into relevant, standardised medical codes is performed by medical coders. These specialists perform their work in the shadows in a number of contexts, making sure that all relevant data is correctly entered to guarantee correctness and consistency.
In order for an insurance provider or government agency to process a patient's bill after an examination or treatment, they need to know what was done. A set of precise codes has been devised to designate medical procedures since common English is too imprecise to provide the insurance company with the precise information it needs. Medical coders are responsible for effectively and efficiently disseminating this knowledge.
Skills required by medical coder includes:-
1. An understanding of medical language and anatomy
2. Comprehending the ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT coding systems
3. Accurate coding of medical procedures and diagnoses
4. Understanding of medical insurance policies and payment methods
5. Knowledge of databases and coding software
6. Attention to detail
7. Analytical and problem-solving abilities;
8. Effective time management and planning abilities
9. Possessing excellent communication and client service abilities
10. The capacity to function both individually and together
ICD-10 Code K56.2-Volvulus :- When a loop of intestine coils around itself and the mesentery that nourishes it, a bowel obstruction called volvulus results. Abdominal discomfort, pain, nausea, constipation, and bloody faeces are some of the symptoms. The onset of symptoms could be gradual or abrupt. Bowel ischemia is caused when the mesentery twists so tightly that the blood supply is cut off. There may be severe pain and a fever may appear.
Intestinal malrotation, Hirschsprung disease, an enlarged colon, pregnancy, and abdominal adhesions are risk factors for volvulus. Additionally, hospitalised patients with neuropsychiatric conditions like Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, etc. exhibit a higher prevalence of volvulus. An increased risk of myopathy, such as Duchene muscular dystrophy, is also linked to a high-fiber diet, persistent constipation caused by repeated use of laxatives and/or enema, and associated myopathies.
